Living with IBS can feel like a constant battle with your own digestive system. The low-FODMAP diet offers relief, but navigating its intricacies can be daunting. That's where a FODMAP-trained dietitian becomes your secret weapon.
The low FODMAP diet is an elimination diet that is designed to help people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and/or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) to identify specific food triggers.
I am a Monash University FODMAP trained dietitian and have completed the FODMAP diet myself. It benefited me so much, that I want to be able to help others feel better.
What is the Low FODMAP diet?
FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. These short-chain carbohydrates can resist digestions and some people with digestive issues can benefit by reducing these in their diet. Not everyone has a sensitivity to FODMAPs, but is is common among people with irritable bowel syndrome. It is generally recommended to completely eliminate all high FODMAP foods for a few weeks and then slowly add high FODMAP foods in to figure our which ones you are sensitive to. This is a strict diet and should be completed under the supervision of a health care provider. After you have determined which foods you are sensitive to, a new diet can be determined for you to follow long-term.
